Note: The following is full of angry rambling about corporations, and generally hate-filled...if you don't want to read it, move along.
Today was a rather sad day in the world of broadcasting...why, you ask?
The end of anything decent, or the current lacktherof, in the world of Television and Radio is here..
I first reference you to this, an article on todays historical FCC vote...
Why historical? It allows corporations, such as the currently power hungry Infinity Broadcasting and Clearchannel Communications, to purchase and own as many television and radio stations as they like.
What does this mean to you, as a person? Well, if you think radio and television sucks and is formulaic now, its only going to continue, with less and less minds behind what goes on the air. As opposed to multiple managements deciding how they want to approach what goes over the air, its one corporate mindset, across the board...Further more, there's a little known fact, that every 8 years, stations have to resubmit for their licenses, which are actually publically approved...however, if the public doesn't speak up, as they DON'T, due to their non knowledge of this ability, the stations can continue running as they please..
What does this mean for me? Well, as I've decided to refocus on sales, not too much...however, if one corporation takes over, and decides to replace all current employees of local stations, I've lost all contacts in various stations, in the purpose of getting a job. This also makes it impossible to build a following as on-air talent via smaller stations, as chances are, the smaller stations will be as voice-tracked (pre-recorded, often in states other than where it is being broadcast) as the big boys are now.
Suffice to say, this will elminate the uniqueness of each and every station on the radio and on television....You know the old saying "57 channels and nothing on?"....it may soon be "57 Channels, and one thing on..all of them."
If you want a real indication of the ruthless nature of the radio business, a friend from BIM, this guy Mark, works at WPOC as a board op, Sunday nights...he is located next door to B104, the classic rock station, who is dragging in the ratings...as found initally at DCRTV.com (a great industry site for local radio), it seems they're going to be changing formats...as seen at this site http://www.b104meansmusic.com/ ....The catch? No one at the B104 office knows about it. That countdown you see at the new B104 site? That's how long the current B104 staffers have a job for.
Ruthless business, eh?
